The current Department of Communication Design dates back to the late 1940s when it was part of the New York State Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences. Its mission, then as now, was to educate individuals for employment in the design field. The curriculum emphasized fundamental skills in drawing, lettering, typography, layout, and production.
