Meet COMD Students
Welcome to COMD at CityTech. The Communication Design program (COMD) at the New York City College of Technology (CityTech). Our Emmy award-winning Communication Design department offers the only NASAD accredited BFA in Communication Design of all CUNY colleges. We at COMD emphasize a foundation, skills, strategy, and studio model, and prepare students for creative careers in graphic design, advertising, motion design, illustration, and web design.
The department is committed to increasing the variety of voices in professions that utilize creativity, technology, and design. The foundation of our program is based on integrating fundamental theory and concepts with applied technology. We believe in building a culture that encourages creativity, collaboration, and conceptual thinking. The department is uniquely positioned to provide a level playing field through a rigorous, creative, and technical education.

What students do with a degree in Communication Design
Art Directors / Creative Directors
Art directors are responsible for the visual style and images in magazines, newspapers, product packaging, and movie and television productions. They create the overall design and direct others who develop artwork or layouts.
UX / UI Designers
UX (User Experience) design is about creating digital products that are easy to use and engaging. Put another way, a UX designer is responsible for the overall feel and ease when interacting with a product, app, or website.
Illustrators
An illustrator is a visual artist who specializes in creating images and designs for various purposes, such as books, magazines, advertisements, and digital media. Illustrators use their artistic skills to convey ideas, tell stories, or enhance the visual appeal of a project. They work with a variety of traditional and digital tools, including pencils, ink, watercolors, and graphic design software, to produce illustrations that complement or communicate the content of a given text or concept.
Motion Graphics Designers
Motion designers create animated and video artwork for the web, television or film. Projects may include commercials, movie clips, stand-alone presentations, trailers, title sequences and post-production work.
