Lucid
For my senior project, I decided to create an illustrated poetry book using my own written work.
My book follows the narrative of an unidentified female character as they navigate the stages of first love; from obsession to breaking up to learning how to pick the pieces back up again.
My aim with this book was to make poetry more accessible to skeptics. I found that one of the many issues people face when reading poetry is that it’s far too subjective. The “deeper meaning(s)” can come off as ostentatious and lead to an eye roll. However, by adding illustrations that work in tandem with writing based on a relatable subject matter, such as relationships, people can form deeper connections with the work and therefore become more invested. The goal, with all art, is the make the reader feel something and hope that my book, Lucid, can do just that; fall in love with poetry and feel moved by the art.
