The Concrete Jungle
The United States is viewed by the world as a country with an abundance of food. However, not all households in America are “food secure” meaning they don’t always have access to adequate, healthy food. Surprisingly, a proportion of the population experiences food insecurity at some time in a given year because of food deprivation and lack of access to food due to economic resource constraints. The fact that so many people are food insecure is important in and of itself, but potentially more concerning are the possible negative health consequences of food insecurity.
Introducing The Concrete Jungle; a community garden located in two of the most food insecure areas in Brooklyn: Brownsville and Bedford-Stuyvesant. There is no one-stop solution to the issue of food insecurity. However, we believe in educating the public on the issue and providing the community with convenient access to produce to help them live a healthy and active lifestyle. Community gardens not only increase access to fresh foods and improve food security, but they also improve dietary habits and reduce the risks of obesity-related diseases
We also take the produce that is grown in our gardens and sell them from our produce truck- somewhat like an ice cream truck. The truck drives around to neighborhoods in Brooklyn twice a week so that individuals who do not have the time or means to visit our garden, can conveniently purchase produce on their block.
