The Art of Cherry Popperz

My project is a concept artbook about an all-girl virtual rock band that is based in the late 90’s. The members consist of 4 young Latina women between the ages of 18-24. They all play in a Nu-Metal band together called the Cherry Popperz, and they’ve obtained a cult following in the underground from their dark, raunchy, and aggressive lyrics, to their jaw-dropping and innovative live performances. As a Latina who grew up listening to rock and metal from a young age, I’ve always felt that I could never share my interests with the people around me. I was afraid of being judged by my friends, who viewed anything goth as “weird” or “disturbing”. This project will target an audience of young women of color who enjoy anything goth, emo, grunge.

This project is to ensure that alternative black and Latina women do exist and are beautiful the way they are. Since these characters are all young adults, they will deal with complicated issues such as love, heartbreak, and pain. I hope this project will connect with my audience on a deeper level by motivating them to embrace themselves for who they are, no matter where they come from, just like the Cherry Popperz.
